It’s already December. We can feel a chill as the temperature gradually drops each day. The winter season brings great fun into our lives, including picnics, feasts, holidays, bonfires, special winter delicacies, etc. However, amid all the joyful moments, the cold weather is havoc on our skin, making it dry, dehydrated, itchy, and flaky. Prolonged negligence to such skin conditions can lead to adverse skin diseases (like eczema and psoriasis).
Therefore, we need to incorporate a few essential seasonal changes to our regular beauty regimen to keep our skin hydrated and moisturised throughout this transitional phase to keep all our skin care problems at bay. Dr Mohd Junaid, Head Ayurvedic Consultant at Ayouthveda, shares a list of the top five winter skin care tips that effectively solve skincare issues. Also Read – Zika Outbreak In Karnataka: Doctors Stress On Preventive Measures
Hot showers are our hot favourite during winter. But, if we love our skin, we must limit our time in hot water. Hot water strips out all-natural oils, making the skin dry, dehydrated, and inflamed. In addition, people who do not moisturise their skin immediately post-shower can rapidly develop cracks and winter eczema.
While one may not be comfortable bathing or washing their face with cold water in the chilly weather, experts recommend using lukewarm water instead. Once they take a tempting shower with lukewarm water, they should apply a good moisturiser on their face containing natural hydrating ingredients. In addition, a body butter/lotion should prevent dryness and lock moisture for longer. Also Read – Lying To Your Doctor? Why Patients Might Be Doing It
Unfortunately, many people still think sunscreen is not required during winter as the sun is only sometimes visible. The warm sun rays feel pleasant in the cold weather, but the UV rays are equally detrimental to the skin, like in summer. So, we must never skip using sunscreen to protect our skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. A natural sunscreen is ideal, irrespective of all seasons.
One must follow a proper skincare routine with the right products curated with authentic Ayurvedic ingredients to keep the skin happy throughout the winter. First, we need to cleanse our face with a mild face wash, a light day moisturiser & sunscreen, and an overnight nourishing moisturiser. Applying these products on damp skin is best after washing the face as it helps to lock the moisture better. Also Read – Pre-Wedding Guide To Skincare and Haircare Routine
As stated above, the chilly weather leads to a lack of water in the skin, including the feet. Therefore, if we don’t treat foot skin properly, it leads to dry, cracked heels, making feet look unclean and ugly. So, we should use a natural, oil-based foot cream to moisturise our feet. Also, one must ensure exfoliation of the feet area, as it helps to absorb the moisturiser quickly and effectively.
Besides external skin pampering with Ayurvedic products, taking care of the diet is also essential. We must remember that a balanced diet keeps our skin fresh and clear. Consumption of antioxidant-rich seasonal fruits and veggies (like strawberries, oranges, grapes, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, green peas, etc.) helps to fight free radicals and keep skin healthy during the cold season. Other food items like Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, eggs, and walnuts) are also suitable for the skin. Moreover, adequate water intake is mandatory to adjust the body’s hydration levels and overall health.  Also Read – Bad Habits That Can Severely Damage Your Kidneys

Moreover, we must remember to take care of overall health backed by diet and exercise, as good health reflects through the skin.
